So What’s WP Remix?
WP Remix has certainly positioned itself as one the most customizable and feature-rich WordPress themes available. Unlike the majority of premium WordPress Themes WP Remix is not aimed primarily at blogging but offers a wide selection of building blocks turning WordPress into a CMS for building enterprise class websites. WP Remix lets you pick and choose what you want from the available building blocks and allows you to design your pages using it’s custom layout editor and more than 50 predefined page themes.
Inside WP Remix
- It has 10 different home page layouts: regardless of if you need a storefront, blog, video site, newspaper/magazine theme, service statement or static corporate layout, it’s all here!
- It’s an e-Commerce site: Five unique “product gallery” layouts serve up five different ways to present products to your customers, complete with “submit” and/or “more info” buttons, taking you to expanded information pages. Layouts catering to brick and mortar businesses, “web hosting” style storefronts and affiliate sales pages are a part of the mix.
- It’s a blog: Looking for something plain and simple? WP Remix still blows away most of those other free or premium WordPress themes for blog setups. It’s clean, structured and modern looking with all of the features and navigation you’ve been seeking.
- It’s a gallery: Display images, thumbnail style, with or without captions in five unique ways, including a “portfolio” setup for all of you photographers and graphic designers.
- It does testimonials: Any business service can benefit from customer testimonials. WP Remix does them right: each testimonial is pre-formatted with CSS to fit the template you’ve seen on professionally designed sites, featuring quotes and call-out boxes.
- It does tabbed navigation: If you’ve used Firefox or IE 7, you know what tabbed layout is all about. WP Remix can mimic this function by letting visitors “tab” from page to page, instead of having to click “Next…” links. It’s just a neat little way to style certain areas of your site!
- It does FAQs: Your frequently asked questions page never looked so good! Click a FAQ, and it will sink down, revealing the answer. Simply click it again to contract back up (this works for regular content, too!)
- It does intricate hierarchical layouts: That sounds like a mouthful, but WP Remix is able to do intricate deep links by allowing you to set separate post templates from home page to main page to sub-main page to sub-sub-main page and so forth. Logically, your main pages have a more navigation-geared layout, as they expand into the more text-heavy areas of your site. This is vital for both search engine optimization and user navigation purposes!
- It does user profiles: Make your staff become known with the included profile feature. A dedicated page neatly organizes photos and bios of your staff.
- It does feature lists: Got a web hosting service? Or, are you selling software? How about anything that has a feature list? WP Remix has specific page templates geared toward these needs, with professional grade icon sets and layouts.
- It does plan comparisons: This got me really excited. Do you know of those comparison lists that have been used to compare “basic, silver, gold” packages, with green checkmarks and red X’s signifying which features are included? You’ve got a really decent one of your own with WP Remix. There are so many uses for plan comparison grids, that you could probably create niche sites that solely use them for product comparisons!
- It does 2, 3 or no-column pages: I used to curse premium WordPress themes that made it nearly impossible to implement a few pages that had no left or right column. You won’t have to worry about this anymore with WP Remix, simply set a page to have column(s) or not. It really is that simple.
- It does “where do I go next?” pages: Your first time visitors have low retention rates…why not make it easier on them, and suggest a simple 3 step process that they should take to get to their/your goal? WP Remix makes this really easy with the “Process steps” template.
- Flexible design.
- Built for modifiation.
- More than 20 pre-made templates for you to play with.
- Nicely structured and commented CSS codes for you to learn the basic structure.
- Good author support.
Cons
My main issue with this theme is the use of free icons, images, and photos. Not because they’re free, but because they’re not referenced and I haven’t seen any licenses for them that says they can be distributed commercially. Although Bhavesh does warn you against using them for anything other than simple placeholders for presentation purposes only, it still bugs me that the sources are not referenced.
Just to be on the safe side, take Bhavesh’s warning seriously and replace those icons, images, and photos.
Conclusion
The downfalls are sourceless icons, images, and photos. But, those issues will be solved and you can easily work around them for the moment. Also, the author makes up for it with good support.
WP Remix has lots of potential and it’ll save you time if you find those layout variations useful. For a surprisingly low price, $55, this theme actually gives you more flexing room than most of the premium themes already in the market.
For novice users, I’d recommend this theme if you’re looking for a wide column theme or an e-commerce styled theme (if you combine the Home templates with the Gallery and Product Details templates.)
Ultimately, if you’re a theme author looking for good theme to base your projects on, WP Remix’s huge list of layout variations will come in handy.
